Worcester State University is planning a program of events, presentations, and speakers to engage students in topics on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), in conjunction with the Baker-Polito administration’s First Statewide STEM Week.

The week kicks off with an open house at the Imoigele P. Aisiku, M.D., ’92 STEM Center on Monday, Oct. 22 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The STEM Center is located in Room 100 of the University’s Ghosh Science and Technology Center.

The STEM Center is named in honor of alumnus Dr. Imoigele Aisiku, M.D., ’92, an emergency medicine physician who attended public schools from K-12 through medical school. The naming recognized a $1 million gift from Dr. Aisiku, who said he wants to help WSU student compete for top graduate schools and careers as well as advance research in science, technology, and health fields.

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, current students in STEM disciplines will give presentations and engage fellow students at an event geared towards recruiting undeclared students into STEM majors. The event will take place in the Ghosh Science and Technology Center lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Presentations will start at 2 p.m. in Room 102.

The week of programming continues on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when Dr. Margaret Kerr of the Chemistry Department will speak on “Paper or Plastics,” at 2 p.m. in the Sheehan Multipurpose Room.

A  roundtable discussion on “Developing an Exit Strategy: It’s Not Just for Seniors” will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Room 100 with STEM Center faculty on Thursday, Oct. 25 to assist students in determining what they can accomplish with a STEM degree.

STEM week runs from Oct. 22 through Oct. 26.
