Worcester State University’s women’s fall sports teams are thriving, as four of six fall women athletic teams were named Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Champions and earned the No. 1 seed in the MASCAC postseason tournaments.
The field hockey team won its second-consecutive MASCAC field hockey regular season championship and earned its first-ever Little East Conference (LEC) championship, securing the No. 1 seed in the LEC tournament. The tournament kicked off Saturday when the Lancers defeated the No. 8 seed Western Connecticut State University 5-2 in a quarterfinal game. The Blue and Gold return to Coughlin Field on Wednesday, November 1 when they host the No. 4 seed Westfield State in a 7 p.m. semifinal game. The winner of that game will make it to the championship game, which is to be held on Saturday, November 4 by the highest seed remaining in the tournament. Read the full story.
For the first time since 1986, the women’s volleyball team claimed the MASCAC volleyball regular season title and the top spot in the upcoming week’s conference tournament. The Lancers concluded the regular season with a perfect 7-0 conference record, leading to the No.1 seed and a first round bye in the MASCAC tournament. The quarterfinal rounds will be held on Wednesday, November 1, which the Lancers have a bye in. Worcester State will host the semifinal and championship rounds on Saturday, November 4, beginning at 2:30 p.m. inside the Lancer Gymnasium. Read the full story.
For the fourth straight season, the Lancers are the top seed in the MASCAC women’s soccer tournament, after claiming a portion of the 2017 MASCAC women’s soccer regular season title this past weekend. The Lancers earned the top spot and a first round bye with a 6-1 league record. The quarterfinal round began on Tuesday, October 31, and then Worcester State will host the winner of the MCLA/Salem State quarterfinal round on Friday, November 3 at 7 p.m. The Championship game is slated for Sunday, November 5 at the highest remaining seed following Friday evening’s games. On Saturday, October 28, the women’s cross country team earned its first-ever MASCAC cross country championship since it started in 1985. Four Lancers placed in the top-10 on the 5K Stanley Park course to earn All-Conference honors. The Blue and Gold were led by junior Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) who came in second in a time of 18:56.54. Freshman Shaylee Puleo (Tewksbury, Mass.) was the first freshman to cross the finish line and earned MASCAC Rookie of the Year honors. Read the full story.
