Computer science [1] major Samantha Tran has been spending part of her summer doing software quality assurance for ten24 Digital Solutions [2] in downtown Worcester.
She learned about the internship at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce’s career fair held at Worcester State University in February 2018. There, she met Partner and Vice President Sumit Verma and Director of Development Kevin Jason.
“This opportunity stood out to me because it would give me a new experience while furthering my understanding of the development process in real-world applications,” said Tran, who wants to become a software developer.
“My job is to ‘break’ things that the developers create to test whether or not their code is fully functional and meets clients’ needs,” she said. “In order to complete both front-end and back-end tasks, I work either individually or with the QA team.”
“ten24 is aware that my goal is to become a developer so they try to incorporate me in developer meetings to see what it’s like when a project is starting out and continues to progress,” she added.
The internship has been very rewarding for Tran. “I truly appreciate how welcoming everyone at ten24 was,” she said. “It makes it hard for me to believe I’ve only been a part of the team for two months so far! I didn’t even know this was possible, but my love for technology grew even more through learning to use different software tools that I wouldn’t have known existed until now.”
The internship relates directly to the Software Quality Assurance and Testing course that Tran will be taking in the 2018 fall semester. “My internship already lets me see what it’s like applied in real life,” she said.
Tran, who is a senior, has been a member of WSU Enactus [3], an entrepreneurial community service club, since her first year. “I’ve gained many new experiences from being a co-project manager and e-board director of technology to traveling internationally,” she said.
She also was a part of the WSU President’s Office Student Leadership Program during the 2018 spring semester. Members “were advocates meeting with representatives in Washington, D.C., on behalf of our University,” she said.
